Bona Primers Guide — Classic UX vs Prime Intense vs Prime White

Posted by Shopify API on

Primer selection is one of the most consequential decisions in a floor finishing system — more so than many contractors expect. The primer affects colour, tannin control, adhesion, and the final appearance of the whole system. Here's how to choose between Bona's three main primers.

Bona Prime Classic UX

Bona Prime Classic UX is the standard primer for most floor finishing work on common Australian timber species. It produces a light, natural colouration that preserves the timber's appearance without adding warmth or cooling it significantly.

Key specs: Water-based, EMICODE EC1, non-yellowing, dry time approximately 1–2 hours at 20°C.

Use it for: Standard species — Tasmanian Oak, Pine, Jarrah (lower tannin), most engineered timber products. It's also the specified primer for the Bona Traffic HD RAW system — the light colouration maintains the raw timber appearance.

Do not use on: Blackbutt, Tallowwood, high-tannin Spotted Gum, Ironbark and similar extractive species. Bona explicitly states Classic UX is not recommended for these — tannin bleed through the coating system is the result.

Bona Prime Intense

Bona Prime Intense is specifically formulated for high-tannin timber species. It locks tannins into the timber rather than letting them migrate upward through the coating system. It produces a medium, rich colouration — warmer and darker than Classic UX.

Key specs: Water-based polyurethane primer, long open time, excellent flow for consistent coverage. Dry time approximately 1–2 hours at 20°C. Coverage 8 m²/L per coat.

Use it for: Blackbutt, Tallowwood, Spotted Gum (high tannin), Ironbark, Merbau, and any species you've tested and found to bleed. The richer colouration enhances the natural warmth of these timbers — which often looks better than the lighter result you'd get from forcing Classic UX onto them anyway.

Note: Prime Intense is not the right choice for the Traffic HD RAW system — its colouration moves away from the raw timber look. On tannin-heavy species wanting a RAW finish, discuss client expectations around colour before proceeding.

Bona Prime White

Bona Prime White is used when a whitened, limed, or Scandinavian-style appearance is the goal. It produces a cool, whitened tone in the timber that carries through into the final finish.

Use it for: Projects where the client has specifically requested a whitened or bleached timber look. New installs in contemporary, coastal or Nordic-inspired interiors. Often paired with Traffic HD Extra Matt for a clean, modern result.

Important: The whitening effect is permanent once the topcoat is applied — make sure the client has approved a sample board before committing to the full floor.
